Red Planting (brood & water)
11 February - 5 May 2011
Marien Fenster
, Neuland CC, Sendlinger Tor Platz 7, Munich . www.marien-fenster.de

Red Planting (brood & water) grows pomegranate trees from seeds in Munich in winter. In the two rooms of the Marien Fenster soil meets light and a slow process begins.

With Red Planting (brood & water), the conscious observation of the slow processes of growth and transformation in the Spitzbergen Project becomes apparent to the general public. Red Planting (brood & water) continues the process which had begun in September, 2010, with the peeling of 613 pomegranates from Pomegranates (The Vanguard). Here the first of 613 pomegranate trees starts to grow.

The first room is soil. An incubator of red soil for the seeds. This room offers them the islands of warmth and protection they need to begin germinating in mid-winter and to develop slowly. Especially at the beginning, the young plants are still extremely fragile, dependent on environmental conditions, the combination of heat, light and moisture.

The second room is light. Water evaporates in bright light. The process of evaporation is slow and steady, like the germination and growth of small plants. However, evaporation is much stabler than the seedlings. The water will evaporate and very slowly go its own way.
